I spent the spring semester of my junior year as a peer tutor for the Learning Commons here at UC. This was a very challenging yet rewarding experience that brought me out of my comfort zone and opened my eyes to new opportunities to use what I have learned in school to help others. I have tutored in the past when I was in high school, but I knew that it would be a lot different in college with much more demanding classes as well as having to balance my own courses with a new job. I tutored mostly in Biology, Musculoskeletal Anatomy, and Anatomy and Physiology classes for around 10 hours a week. The great thing about this was that I was able to refresh so much that I had learned in those classes while tutoring that it benefited me in my new courses. The thing that impacted me the most during my first semester of tutoring was being exposed to so many different people that I never would have met if I wasn’t a tutor. Besides the few students that I saw on a regular basis, I would have at least one new student a week which brought me to realize that people come from different backgrounds, education levels, families, etc. and that not everyone learns the same way that I do. This made me learn how to be creative and empathetic so that I could come up with the best way to approach the material on a student-to-student basis. This experience helped me grow not only as a tutor, but also as a person because I was able to make connections with and relate to people that I normally wouldn’t interact with. To showcase my experience, I chose to use my leadership reflection. This reflection goes into more detail about the things that I experienced, what I learned from them, and how it has impacted my leadership skills.
