Going into this experience I was nervous about spending the weekend with a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at the Center for Courageous Kids (CCK) because it was something that I did not have a lot of experience in. However, I had no idea how great of an impact the weekend would have on me and how much I would learn about these kids and myself. I was paired with a family, a mom, her son with ASD, and her daughter, and spent almost every moment of the weekend with them. We ate meals together, danced, and participated in activities like horseback riding, fishing, archery and bowling. My goal was to relate to and engage with the kids I encountered because I have not had a lot of opportunities to do this in my life, and also view my experience from a physical therapy point of view. I was able to interact with several kids with and without ASD, learn about their interests, and laugh and play which was very rewarding to me. My favorite moment of the weekend was when I volunteered to do face painting and got a few minutes to talk to each of the kids about their favorite part of camp. It made me realize that I am good with kids and could potentially see myself working with them one day. I also was able to appreciate how much these kids were able to participate in through the help of CCK. It was amazing that some of these children with severe ASD were able to ride a horse, shoot an arrow, or bowl in an arcade in a safe and modified environment that was not overwhelming to them.
Below is a sample of some of the journaling I did while at camp in order to remember my experience in the future. I chose this because it gives a good idea of what I was thinking and feeling during my experience.

- What did I learn this weekend?
I learned how ASD presents itself in many forms. I was paired with a child who was well behaved, had an amazing memory, and kicked my butt in bowling. On the other hand, I was able to observe kids who were non-verbal, fussy, or loud. - How did I contribute this weekend?
I contributed by being a friend to talk to, taking the kids to do activities while the mom watched a financial presentation, and assisting the kids whenever they needed it. I was there to make the experience great for everyone.
